“Deadly Ebola Outbreak Spreads Rapidly in Eastern Congo”

Published on

The ongoing Ebola outbreak has now become the most rapidly spreading in history, resulting in over 750 fatalities. In Eastern Congo, there have been more than 2,000 confirmed cases, with additional suspected cases appearing in two other provinces, including Kisangani. This has raised concerns about the extent of the virus’s spread.

Health officials have found that 80% of new cases are connected to unknown transmission chains, making it challenging to track and control the infection. The specific origin of the outbreak remains unknown, and it is driven by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments, making containment efforts more difficult.

The escalating outbreak is putting immense strain on the region’s already fragile healthcare system. Recent strikes by unpaid staff at key health centers have hindered response efforts. The affected workers, including epidemiologists and gravediggers, demanded payment before agreeing to resume their duties.

The situation worsened with another strike at Bunia General Hospital, potentially disrupting containment measures. The outbreak has spread through a region already struggling with limited resources, armed conflicts, and misinformation about the reality of Ebola.

Ebola spreads from infected animals to humans and then between individuals through direct contact with bodily fluids. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and in severe cases, internal and external bleeding. Authorities have implemented measures to prevent further transmission, including restrictions on traditional funeral practices that involve close contact with the deceased.

Research is underway to explore potential treatments for the Bundibugyo virus, including remdesivir and MBP134. The World Health Organization is conducting trials to assess the effectiveness of these treatments, but results may take months to determine. The study is currently limited to one treatment center in Ituri province, with plans for expansion once safety permits.
