Deadly Virus Outbreak on MV Hondius Cruise Ship: 3 British Deaths

Published on

Onboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, a deadly virus outbreak has affected 23 British individuals, with three reported deaths linked to the virus. Among the affected passengers and crew members, two Brits, including a crew member, have fallen ill due to the hantavirus discovered on the ship. Oceanwide Expedition, the cruise operator, is managing a critical medical situation onboard, with 19 passengers and four crew members originating from Great Britain.

Experts suggest that the rat-borne virus may have been contracted before passengers embarked on their dream cruise from Argentina’s ‘End of the World.’ Reports indicate that the first ill passenger had visited Patagonia before the cruise departure. Presently, a 69-year-old British tourist from the tragic Antarctic trip is in intensive care in Johannesburg, with two sick crew members, one of whom is British, still onboard.

Stranded passengers are currently on the ship as Cape Verde has refused entry. Local health authorities in Cape Verde have visited the ship in quarantine, advising it to continue its route without allowing passengers to disembark. The vessel is expected to head towards the Canary Islands due to the ongoing medical emergency.

Oceanwide Expeditions has confirmed that among the 149 individuals onboard from 23 different countries, 23 are British and two are Irish. The company also provided a timeline of events, including the deaths of passengers on board, with ongoing investigations into the cause and potential connections to the hantavirus outbreak.

Efforts are underway to ensure strict precautionary measures on the ship, including isolation, hygiene protocols, and medical monitoring, with passengers receiving necessary support. The World Health Organization is actively involved in supporting the response to the hantavirus event and conducting detailed investigations.

As the situation unfolds, health authorities are investigating potential sources of infection and the spread of the virus, emphasizing the importance of thorough investigations and preventive measures. The outbreak highlights the challenges posed by the hantavirus and the need for coordinated responses to protect public health.
