“Death Toll Rises: Beluga from Marineland Dies at Shedd Aquarium”

Published on

Another beluga whale that was relocated from Marineland has passed away at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The aquarium confirmed that Caspian, a 27-year-old female beluga, died on Wednesday despite attempts to save her. This marks the sixth death of animals from the closed theme park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, following a significant transfer of whales and dolphins over the summer.

Since being moved from Marineland, four other belugas and one dolphin have also perished. Shedd Aquarium reported that Caspian was experiencing difficulties with eating and exhibited abnormal electrolyte levels in her blood samples, leading to dangerously acidic blood. Although these findings helped the veterinary team assess Caspian’s condition, the exact cause of death remains undetermined.

Caspian was kept on life support for nearly four hours before succumbing to her condition. Previously, Shedd conducted necropsies on two other deceased Marineland whales, Peekachu and Rain, determining that they had chronic underlying illnesses. The relocation of 30 belugas and four dolphins from Marineland to various U.S. and Spanish aquariums took place over six weeks, as Marineland faced financial constraints and could no longer support the remaining captive marine mammals in Canada.

Tragically, following the relocation, a beluga named Jelly Bean and a dolphin named Echo passed away at Oceanografic Valencia in Spain. Post-mortem details released by Shedd Aquarium suggested that the deceased belugas already had significant gastrointestinal diseases. The results of necropsies for the other deceased animals are still pending.
