“Decades-Long Mystery Solved: Family’s Christmas Tree Trip Fate Revealed”

Published on

After nearly seven decades, the mystery surrounding a family’s disappearance on their way to get a Christmas tree has been resolved.

Authorities have uncovered the fate of the family who went missing in December 1958. Tragically, two of the children were found deceased months after the initial search, but the whereabouts of the other family members remained unknown.

The bodies of Kenneth and Barbara, the parents, along with one of their children, Barbie Martin, have now been positively identified. Their remains were located in Oregon’s Columbia River, as confirmed by officials.

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its extensive investigation that spanned several decades, ruling out any evidence of foul play. They stated, “The remains of Virginia and Susan Martin were discovered downstream months later; however, the parents, Kenneth and Barbara, and their eldest daughter Barbara (Barbie) were never located despite thorough search efforts and diving operations.”

In 2024, an independent researcher named Archer Mayo found a Ford station wagon, believed to belong to the missing family, submerged in the Columbia River, as reported by MailOnline. The Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted DNA analysis on the remains and compared them with samples from the Martin family’s relatives to confirm their identities.

The Oregon Medical Examiner’s Office released a statement saying, “The successful identification is a result of a collaborative effort, scientific advancements, and the use of forensic genetic genealogy.” Ortham Inc, a forensic genetics lab specializing in long-standing cases, provided crucial assistance in analyzing the DNA.

Kristen Mittelman, Chief Development Officer, expressed, “Numerous individuals dedicated years to locating and identifying the Martin family, and we are pleased to have contributed to the resolution.” Mittelman added, “Cases like this not only impact the family but also the wider community, and hopefully, this brings closure to many affected individuals.”

The family was reported missing on December 9, 1958, after failing to show up for work, sparking initial speculations of a car accident leading to their disappearance.

At the time of the incident, the children, Barbara, Virginia, and Susan, were 14, 13, and 11 years old, respectively. Donald, the eldest sibling at 28, expressed doubts to investigators, suggesting the deaths were not accidental.

An autopsy report from 1959 indicated the possibility of a gunshot wound to one of the daughters’ heads as a potential cause of
