In a shocking and brutal crime that horrified the nation, Andre Thomas brutally murdered his ex-wife, Laura Boren, and her two young children, carrying out gruesome mutilations that he claimed were commanded by a divine force.
The horrific incident took place in March 2004 when Thomas forcefully entered Boren’s residence, fatally stabbing her and then removing her heart. He tragically repeated the same violent acts on her children before turning the knife on himself.
After the heinous spree, Thomas walked calmly to the local police station, confessing that he believed he was instructed by a higher power to “destroy demons.”
In a desperate attempt to evade justice, Thomas proceeded to gouge out both of his eyes, starting with his right eye while awaiting trial in a Texas jail. Despite being diagnosed with schizophrenia and pleading insanity, a jury found him guilty and sentenced him to death.
During his court proceedings, the judge acknowledged the disturbing nature of the crime, noting Thomas’s mental health complexities under Texas law.
While incarcerated on death row, Thomas removed his remaining eye and consumed it as a purported measure to prevent authorities from accessing his thoughts. Despite being transferred to a specialized psychiatric unit within the Texas prison system, his death sentence remained in effect.
The case sparked discussions on the ethics of executing individuals with severe mental illnesses, with Thomas’s legal team arguing that his mental state rendered him unfit for capital punishment.
In 2023, a judge postponed Thomas’s scheduled execution to allow for further evaluation of his mental well-being. Presently, Thomas remains on death row, sightless, and housed in a facility designed for inmates with severe psychiatric conditions.
