An Australian woman has shared her astonishment upon discovering a multitude of long-lost relatives through a DNA test. Adriana Turk, whose father escaped Nazi Germany in 1937, had believed her extended family perished in the Holocaust.
After her brother Julian’s passing in December 2024, Adriana delved deeper into her family history, anticipating only slivers of information. To her surprise, she unearthed over 50 living relatives scattered worldwide.
Among the newfound connections were numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and their descendants, including three survivors from her grandmother’s lineage, identified through MyHeritage DNA.
Reflecting on this revelation, Adriana expressed her initial assumption of having no surviving family members and the emotional void left by her brother’s death. However, her search yielded an abundance of connections, filling that void.
Recently, Adriana met one of her newly discovered relatives, her cousin Raanan Gidron, a 73-year-old psychotherapist residing in Israel. Mr. Gidron’s mother endured the Theresienstadt and Auschwitz concentration camps before escaping to marry a fellow Holocaust survivor.
Reconnecting with Adriana, Mr. Gidron acknowledged the difficulty in tracing relatives in New Zealand but found solace in their reunion. Adriana described how this encounter mended a lifelong sense of emptiness and invisibility, completing a missing piece of her identity.
Their story unfolded amidst global observances of Holocaust Memorial Day, commemorating the millions lost during the Holocaust. The reconnection of Jewish families through DNA testing signifies a growing trend, offering hope in a community often plagued by fear and anxiety.
Mr. Gidron highlighted the message of hope their reunion brings, particularly crucial in light of recent tragic events. The deadly attack on a Hanukkah event in Bondi, Australia, where 15 individuals lost their lives, including a young girl, shook the community deeply.
The suspect in the attack, Naveed Akram, faces numerous charges, including murder, while his father, Sajid Akram, lost his life during a confrontation with authorities.
