DNA Tests Reveal 38-Year Switched at Birth Saga

Published on

Two men who recently discovered they were switched at birth 38 years ago through DNA tests are now pointing fingers at a North Dakota hospital for depriving them of their intended lives. Kyle Bylin stumbled upon his birth family after taking a random at-home DNA test received during a Christmas gift exchange. This led him to connect with his biological aunt on a genealogy platform, who then had her nephew, Jeremy Morrison, undergo a DNA test, confirming the mix-up.

Morrison expressed his shock upon noticing a striking resemblance between himself and Bylin’s brother, solidifying the truth of the switch. Both Bylin and Morrison, born on the same day at Unity Medical Center in Grafton, North Dakota, believe they were sent home with the wrong parents. Despite the hospital denying responsibility for the swap, Bylin, formerly known as Jeremy Morrison, still possesses the hospital bracelet wrongly identifying him as Kyle Bylin.

The revelation from the DNA tests has been life-altering for the families involved, leading to emotional confrontations, perplexing moments, and contemplation of missed opportunities. Evelyn Newton, who raised Bylin as her own, expressed feeling robbed of the experiences she should have had with her biological son but emphasized that Kyle remains her child. Meanwhile, Morrison continues to view the family that raised him, Elizabeth O’Toole and Terry Morrison, as his true parents, reflecting on his childhood filled with love, sports, and academic success.

Despite the hospital acknowledging the mix-up, the lack of concrete evidence complicates the investigation. Unity Medical Center extended sympathy to the affected families, acknowledging the challenge posed by the decades-long gap in medical records availability and the absence of the original delivery team members. Both Bylin and Morrison have connected with their biological parents and are navigating the complexities of building new relationships while coming to terms with their altered realities.

Legal action has been pursued by attorney Tim O’Keefe on behalf of the families, seeking compensation for emotional distress resulting from the hospital’s negligence and medical malpractice. As they continue to adjust to their new truths, Morrison emphasized the ongoing process of rebuilding relationships and accepting the irreversible past. Dr. Jonathan Marron, a pediatric oncologist and bioethics educator, emphasized the rarity of such mix-ups in contemporary healthcare, attributing advancements in electronic health records for minimizing such errors.
