Dog boarder avoids jail after neglecting family pet to death

Published on

A dog boarder who neglected a family dog that tragically died on a hot day has been given a suspended prison sentence. Charlotte Sutton, 26, left the dog, named Hero, unattended for an extended period at her property while running an unlicensed home dog boarding service. Despite warnings from Braintree District Council about the legal requirements, she continued operating the service. Sutton was prosecuted and appeared before District Judge Williams at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court.

She was convicted of causing unnecessary suffering under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and admitted to running an animal boarding business without the necessary license. Sutton received a 26-week prison term, suspended for two years, along with 150 hours of unpaid work, a £10,000 payment towards the council’s prosecution costs, and a £154 victim surcharge.

Following the sentencing, Leighanne Ship, the devastated owner of Hero, expressed gratitude to Braintree District Council for pursuing the case. Ship mentioned that while nothing can bring Hero back, the conviction brings some closure and justice. She emphasized the importance of using licensed animal boarding services and the responsibility that comes with caring for someone else’s pet.

Ship hopes that sharing their experience will prevent other families from going through similar heartbreak and anguish. Hero’s legacy, she believes, will continue to protect pets by raising awareness about the significance of using reputable and licensed animal boarding facilities.
