Welsh artist Bronwen Lewis, initially covering Dolly Parton’s tunes in her native language, never imagined a collaboration with the country music icon. Lewis, a singer-songwriter from Wales, began sharing her Welsh renditions of Parton’s songs online approximately two years ago.
Her version of “Jolene” garnered attention from Parton’s niece, Jada Star, leading to a collaboration with the legendary singer. The new Welsh rendition of “Jolene,” featuring vocals in both Welsh and English from Parton, was recently released on major streaming platforms. This marks Parton’s second posthumous song release and one of her final recordings before her passing at the age of 80 in August.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Lewis and Star, along with Parton, recorded the track in the studio. Star emphasized the significance of Lewis’s cover of “Jolene” to Parton’s family, leading to the collaborative effort.
The Welsh language, with a rich history predating the Roman Empire, has endured suppression efforts over centuries. Presently, about 17.8% of Welsh people speak the language, following its ban in the past and subsequent revival through legislative efforts.
Lewis highlighted the pride in the Welsh language and culture, emphasizing the global impact of their collaboration with Dolly Parton. She hopes the project conveys a universal message of shared emotions and unity across languages and cultures.
