A courageous survivor of domestic abuse, who endured severe violence from an ex-partner, has issued a chilling warning of potential harm following the perpetrator’s recent imprisonment.
Matthew John Ambler, 36, subjected his former partner to brutal physical assaults, including throwing her around, strangling her, and threatening her with a knife, a court in York revealed. Prosecutors stated that the abuse had been ongoing since at least August 2025, when Ambler, under the influence of crack cocaine, brandished a blade in a paranoid state.
The victim, who initially believed Ambler to be a decent person, spoke out as he was sentenced for his violent behavior. She expressed concern that if she remained silent, Ambler could pose a threat to her and other women. Recalling her shock at his true nature, she emphasized the urgency of taking a stand against him to prevent further violence.
Describing a harrowing incident involving a knife, the victim recounted how Ambler, fueled by drug use, physically assaulted her, leaving her with severe injuries. She detailed being punched, strangled, and thrown around during the terrifying ordeal, which culminated in her sustaining multiple serious injuries, including a broken nose and fractured rib.
Ambler, who pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm, wielding a blade, and non-fatal strangulation, received a prison sentence of three years and seven months. Additionally, a five-year restraining order was imposed to prevent him from contacting his former partner.
Acknowledging his temper issues exacerbated by substance abuse, Ambler received advice from the judge to address his drug dependency for a chance at a better future. The court highlighted the importance of breaking free from drug use for a path towards a more positive life.
