Australia’s defense minister has verified that a drone strike targeted an air base utilized by the country near Dubai during the recent weekend.
Amid ongoing hostilities in the Middle East, the United States and Israel conducted joint strikes hitting various Iranian targets on February 28. In response to the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran launched multiple strikes across the region, escalating military engagements.
Richard Marles, Australia’s Minister of Defense, informed the media that an Australian air base near Dubai faced a drone attack over the weekend, with no Australian casualties reported. The site has been identified as a crucial hub for Western military operations and serves as the Australian Defence Force’s headquarters in the Middle East.
Additionally, other locations, such as the United Kingdom’s RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, have also experienced strikes. Marles assured that all Australian personnel at the Al Minhad Air Base were safe and accounted for following the initial night’s attack.
Australia maintains around 100 personnel in the Middle East, with a majority stationed in the UAE. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has previously expressed support for the US and Israel’s actions aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and disrupting international peace and security threats.
