A disruption occurred during a light show when around 90 drones unexpectedly plummeted from the sky at a popular tourist destination. Video footage captured the moment when numerous drones descended from the night sky over Sydney’s Darling Harbour, leaving bystanders astonished. The company in charge of the event, Skymagic, attributed the unusual incident to a radio frequency alteration causing a glitch, reassuring that all drones remained within safety boundaries.

The organizers of the annual Vivid Sydney festival acknowledged the mishap on Monday, attributing it to unforeseen technical issues. Consequently, they have canceled several upcoming shows scheduled during the three-week festival. A spokesperson from Skymagic later disclosed that 89 drones had landed in the water around Cockle Bay, with 83 falling into the harbor and six landing on the boardwalk.

Karen Jones, the CEO of Destination New South Wales, issued an apology to the disappointed spectators, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused. She mentioned uncertainties about the next drone show scheduled for Sunday night, depending on ongoing assessments of the situation. Witnesses like Robert, an employee at Darling Harbour, described the audible impact of the drones crashing onto the wharf, illustrating the magnitude of the incident.

Following the incident, festival organizers stated that Skymagic and government bodies would conduct a comprehensive evaluation before approving any remaining shows. A Vivid Sydney representative also apologized for the frustration and disruption experienced by attendees. The Star-Bound drone show, which was part of the festival and involved 1,000 drones for a lengthy display, faced setbacks due to the unexpected malfunction.

Vivid Sydney had introduced drone shows in 2024, attracting significant attention, but last year opted against such displays due to concerns about overcrowding. The future of drone shows at the festival remains uncertain pending further assessments and approvals.
