A reckless driver, driving under the influence of drugs at four times the legal limit, has been sentenced to jail for causing the deaths of his brother and 12-year-old nephew in a tragic crash.

Michael Webb, 35, lost control of his vehicle while trying to overtake another car at nearly double the speed limit, resulting in a collision with a tree that split the car in two, fatally injuring his brother, Peter Webb, 40, and his nephew, Ben.

Following his guilty plea to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, Webb, residing at Park Avenue, South Shields, received a 13-year and six-month prison term.

During the court proceedings, Ashleigh Webb, the wife of Peter and mother of Ben, emotionally expressed that no punishment could ever suffice for the loss caused by Webb’s irresponsible driving behavior, which she described as a disaster waiting to happen.

Recounting the devastating moment when she learned about the crash involving her husband and son, Mrs. Webb highlighted Webb’s disregard for safety and the tragic consequences of his actions. She emphasized the lack of remorse displayed by Webb, citing his online activities while on bail as evidence of his callousness.

Mrs. Webb also revealed her concerns about Webb’s dangerous driving habits, stating that he had previously exhibited reckless behavior behind the wheel and ignored pleas to slow down, indicating a pattern of disregard for the safety of his passengers.

The court heard that Webb was likely driving at a speed of around 73mph in a 40mph zone when the fatal crash occurred, following a series of reckless maneuvers on the road.

Prosecutors detailed the events leading up to the crash, highlighting Webb’s excessive speed and loss of control, which resulted in the tragic deaths of his brother and nephew.

Addressing Webb during sentencing, Judge Tim Gittins emphasized the gravity of the situation, condemning Webb’s actions as a preventable tragedy waiting to happen. The judge imposed a lengthy driving ban and mandated an extended driving test before Webb can regain his driving privileges, underscoring the severity of the consequences of his reckless driving.
