Dubai Residents Detained for Sharing Drone Attack Photos

Published on

Three individuals who survived a terrifying drone assault on a high-end skyscraper in Dubai have purportedly been detained for privately distributing photos of the incident. They were said to be residents within the skyscraper in the Creek Harbour area and shared images with their loved ones to confirm their safety after the explosion, as reported by Detained in Dubai. Shocking video footage revealed a significant hole in the skyscraper caused by a blaze that erupted inside the apartment complex on Wednesday.

Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the location, approximately 10km from the international airport, to extinguish the fire that blazed in the dead of night. Following the attack, three residents were visited by local authorities who requested access to their phones, according to the advocacy group.

Radha Stirling, the CEO of Detained in Dubai, expressed concern, stating, “When individuals go through the trauma of a drone strike hitting their building, their immediate reaction is to reach out to their families and assure them of their safety. Criminalizing this natural response runs the risk of penalizing victims rather than safeguarding them.”

Stirling issued a caution to expatriates and tourists in the United Arab Emirates regarding the stringent cybercrime regulations in the country. She emphasized that in the UAE, even sharing a private photo with family members can lead to a legal probe if it pertains to sensitive incidents.

Amidst a reported crackdown on individuals posting images of Iran’s retaliatory strikes on Dubai, Tehran initiated a series of attacks on its neighboring countries in the Middle East following a conflict with the US and Israel that resulted in the death of Iran’s supreme leader on February 28.

Dubai has experienced multiple drone strikes, including some targeting the renowned international airport. A British tourist may potentially face a two-year imprisonment for allegedly recording Iranian missiles flying over the state, according to Detained in Dubai. The 60-year-old from London was among 21 individuals accused of violating the UAE’s strict laws against filming or sharing social media content related to conflicts.

The campaign group stated that he was apprehended in Dubai on March 9 and promptly deleted the footage from his phone upon request by authorities. Stirling commented on this separate case, highlighting that under UAE cybercrime laws, a single post could lead to multiple arrests and serious charges with lengthy prison sentences. She advised caution during times of tension to prevent potential legal consequences and human rights violations.
