A tragic incident occurred at a family home where a “modified” e-bike caused a devastating fire, resulting in the deaths of a mother and her two children, aged four and eight, as revealed in an inquest. Gemma Germeney, 31, along with Lilly Peden and Oliver Peden, lost their lives in the fire that took place in Cambridge on June 30, 2023.

In addition to the family’s heartbreaking loss, their two pet dogs also perished in the blaze at their residence in Sackville Close. The children’s father, Scott Peden, was left in a coma for a month due to the incident.

Authorities stated that the likely cause of the fire was a charging e-bike. During a pre-inquest review hearing, Cambridgeshire’s coroner, Elizabeth Gray, mentioned that the e-bike had been modified, leading to the tragic fire.

Scott Peden’s representative, Miles Bennett, raised concerns about a person known as Mr. Severinov potentially being a key witness in the case due to his involvement in modifying the lithium battery, which swiftly preceded the destructive fire.

The full inquest is expected to delve into details surrounding the purchase of the bike, the battery theft, and the subsequent modifications. The potential for civil proceedings or prosecution by the Office for Product Safety and Standards remains uncertain.

Following the heartbreaking loss of his family, Mr. Peden has been advocating for enhanced e-bike safety measures. He highlighted the lack of awareness regarding the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and emphasized the urgent need for regulatory reforms to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

The proceedings have been adjourned, with a two-day full inquest hearing scheduled for a later date, likely in August or beyond. The police confirmed the tragic deaths at the scene and the subsequent passing of the children in the hospital.
