Actress Kitty Castledine from EastEnders, known for her role as Penny Branning, is set to tackle a significant pregnancy storyline within the soap opera.
The popular BBC One series recently revealed this dramatic development during a family gathering led by Jack Branning (played by Scott Maslen), accompanied by his partner Denise Fox (portrayed by Diane Parish) and his brother Max (acted by Jake Wood).
Tensions rose during the meal when Jack stumbled upon a pregnancy test in a bag, initially assuming it belonged to Chelsea Fox (played by Zaraah Abrahams) but later suspecting Lily Slater (portrayed by Lillia Turner) following suspicious interactions with Ricky (acted by Frankie Day).
As Jack geared up to address a potential pregnancy issue with his teenage daughter Amy Mitchell (played by Ellie Dadd), Penny, his eldest daughter, unexpectedly confessed to owning the test. Although initially denying being pregnant, Penny’s revelation of a positive result left Jack disappointed in her dishonesty.
Kitty Castledine has portrayed Penny on the BBC One show since January 2024. In discussing Penny’s emotional turmoil regarding the pregnancy test, the actress shared that the character is feeling overwhelmed and scared by the situation, as reported by OK! magazine.
She further explained, “Penny is grappling with the reality of potentially becoming a young disabled mother, facing a mix of emotions similar to many expecting mothers who find themselves in unexpected situations.”
“As she opens up to those around her, Penny realizes she has a support system. She aims to give herself time to process her feelings, assess the situation, and make decisions,” Kitty added.
Kitty also revealed that Penny intends to keep the pregnancy a secret, expressing her character’s inclination to avoid facing the potential challenges of being a disabled young mother by isolating herself from the reality of the situation.
The relationship between Jack Branning and his daughter Penny has always been strained. Penny, who spent most of her life in France with her mother Selina, was left paralyzed following a vengeful attack targeting Jack, resulting in a permanent spinal cord injury that confined her to a wheelchair.
Apart from her on-screen role, Kitty, aged 24, is a wheelchair user herself due to a life-altering condition she developed in childhood.
Kitty was diagnosed with transverse myelitis at the age of seven, a rare condition affecting the central nervous system that results in reliance on a wheelchair due to spinal cord damage caused by the immune system.
Publicly discussing her daughter’s illness in a podcast, Kitty’s mother Lucy Alexander, known for her appearances on Homes Under the Hammer, emphasized the transformative impact of the condition on their lives and Kitty’s resilience in adapting to the challenges.
