“EastEnders character Denise Fox faces shocking cancer diagnosis”

Published on

Denise Fox from EastEnders is confronted with devastating news today as she learns about her blood cancer diagnosis. While her partner, Jack Branning, focuses on the upcoming World Cup, Denise, whose initial symptoms included fatigue, will soon discover she has acute myeloid leukaemia after a bone marrow biopsy.

Yvonne Gabriel, aged 58, can relate to Denise’s experience. In July 2018, the retired deputy head teacher found out she had AML and was initially shocked as she believed adults couldn’t get leukaemia. However, she found solace in the doctor’s assurance that the cancer was treatable, carrying that hope throughout her cancer journey.

Returning to her home in Wallington, Surrey, Yvonne shared the distressing news with her civil partner, Annette, 63, a lawyer, and her daughter, Leanne, 38, a graphic designer. They provided unwavering support, emphasizing the treatability and curability of the cancer.

EastEnders collaborated with Blood Cancer UK on Denise’s storyline, launching on World Blood Cancer Day, reflecting Yvonne’s own journey. Both Yvonne and Diane Parish, who plays Denise, are Black. The charity highlights that Black or mixed-race leukaemia patients have a lower chance of finding a matched stem cell donor compared to white patients.

Yvonne commenced treatment at Sutton’s Royal Marsden Hospital immediately after diagnosis, undergoing intensive chemotherapy and completing it in November. She praises EastEnders for shedding light on blood cancer, believing it can aid viewers in recognizing symptoms or understanding the challenges faced by those with the disease.

Yvonne suggests staying active during treatment and shares her experience of losing her hair, a common side effect of chemotherapy. Despite the emotional impact, she sees it as a positive sign of treatment efficacy and encourages self-expression through jewelry or clothing.

Having benefited from massage therapy herself during treatment, Yvonne pursued training in the field, labeling it as life-changing for its physical and emotional benefits.

Matthew White, director at Blood Cancer UK, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about blood cancer, particularly due to delays in diagnosis. Featuring blood cancer on mainstream shows like EastEnders can help bring visibility to this “hidden” cancer.
