EastEnders actor Aaron Thiara, aged 33, gained fame in the show as the character Ravi Gurati in 2022. He has been part of a compelling storyline on Albert Square that captivated viewers.
The actor, originally from Wolverhampton, plays a character diagnosed with Complex PTSD (CPTSD). After experiencing breakdowns and a suicide attempt in previous episodes, Ravi is depicted receiving treatment in a mental health facility.
During an event in London, where he participated in a charity auction organized by Mind and The Ricky Hatton Foundation, Thiara discussed the stigma surrounding mental health in the South Asian community and his views on the under-16 media ban.
When asked about the importance of his presence at the event focused on men’s mental health, Thiara highlighted the necessity of promoting open conversations to combat stereotypes and expectations that can hinder progress in addressing mental health issues.
Thiara emphasized the significance of public figures speaking openly about mental health struggles, noting that it can provide validation and support to individuals facing similar challenges.
Reflecting on his South Asian background, Thiara acknowledged the cultural barriers that often discourage discussions about mental health within the community. He stressed the importance of breaking this silence and fostering a culture where individuals feel empowered to seek help and share their struggles.
Regarding the under-16 social media ban, Thiara expressed support for the measure, emphasizing the need for investment in community services to ensure that young people have alternative activities and support systems beyond social media.
