June Brown, known for her iconic role in EastEnders, sought assistance from former colleague Lord Michael Cashman to arrange an assisted death before her passing in 2022, according to the peer’s recent revelation.
During a debate at the House of Lords on assisted dying, where the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was ultimately unsuccessful, Lord Cashman shared that Ms. Brown had reached out to him for help prior to her demise.
A former co-star of Ms. Brown in the late 1980s on the BBC soap EastEnders, Lord Cashman reminisced about their time together when she famously played the character Dot Cotton, a chain-smoking launderette worker.
Notably, Ms. Cotton was central to a significant euthanasia storyline on television, aiding another character in ending their life following a terminal cancer diagnosis in 2000.
In a poignant address to the chamber, Lord Cashman recalled Ms. Brown’s plea to him, expressing her desire for a dignified death in a country where she could choose her end.
Regrettably, the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was shelved after peers ran out of time for deliberation, necessitating MPs to reintroduce the legislation in the House of Commons for further consideration.
Prior to this revelation, Lord Cashman had hinted at a friend’s suffering and desire for assisted dying without revealing the identity. He shared the emotional account of his efforts to assist his friend, reflecting on the challenges faced in trying to fulfill their wishes.
Reflecting on the missed opportunity to pass the significant Bill, Lord Cashman expressed his disappointment in not being able to honor the humane wishes of those seeking autonomy over their end-of-life choices.
Lord Cashman also highlighted how Ms. Brown had supported him in participating in activism against Section 28 while they worked together on EastEnders, showcasing their bond beyond the screen.
Additionally, Lord Cashman recounted the painful experience of witnessing his husband’s prolonged and agonizing death over a decade ago, further underscoring the importance of end-of-life autonomy.
