An elderly British man who plays bowls found himself in a Chilean prison due to a scam involving an alleged £7.85 million inheritance. William “Billy Boy” Eastment, 80, shared his harrowing experience after being caught at Santiago Airport with over 5kg of methamphetamine hidden in his luggage.

Initially mistaken for a drug smuggler, Eastment faced the terrifying prospect of a lengthy prison sentence in South America. However, an investigation into his electronic devices supported his claims of being deceived, leading to the dismissal of the case and his imminent return home.

Stranded in Chile for almost a year, Eastment is eager to go back to his modest bungalow in Milborne Port, Somerset, where he plans to enjoy a cup of tea with milk and a roast chicken dinner. Despite his enthusiasm to return, the journey poses challenges as he has lost his wallet, debit card, and bus pass.

The elaborate scam that ensnared Eastment began with a misleading email promising a substantial inheritance. This elaborate scheme involved trips around the world and false assurances, ultimately resulting in his unwitting involvement in drug trafficking. Despite efforts to verify the legitimacy of the arrangement, Eastment fell victim to the criminals’ convincing tactics.

After enduring months of uncertainty and fear in a Chilean prison, Eastment was finally vindicated when authorities determined he had been duped. The case against him was dropped, and arrangements were made by the British Embassy for his safe return home.
