A manhunt is underway for an elderly individual who wounded five individuals in Athens, Greece. The assailant initiated gunfire at an EFKA social security office and subsequently at a courthouse in central Athens, as confirmed by Greek authorities.
Law enforcement reported that an armed suspect wielding a shotgun first attacked a social security office in the Kerameikos district, injuring an employee. Although police officers provided assistance, the perpetrator managed to escape. The same individual is believed to have carried out another shooting at a court building, where four women were reportedly shot.
Witnesses described how the perpetrator began shooting as people evacuated the courthouse, leaving the shotgun behind before fleeing. Local sources suggest the individual works as a scrap metal collector.
Before the incidents, the suspect reportedly broke into the social security office, fired at a male employee, and then traveled to the courthouse location by taxi, which is approximately 5km away. Footage from ERT News showed ambulance crews transporting at least three injured individuals from the courthouse.
The motive behind the shootings remains unclear. Following the courthouse incident, the gunman allegedly tossed envelopes with documents on the floor, claiming they were the cause of his actions. The victims’ current conditions have not been officially disclosed, but reports indicate they were taken to Erythros Stavros Hospital and are in stable condition.
Gun violence is uncommon in Greece, where firearm possession is permitted but closely monitored.
