In an exclusive interview with scientist Elodie Freymann, intriguing insights into the self-medication behavior of African elephants in Kenya’s Mount Elgon region have emerged. Freymann, a researcher specializing in animal self-medication, expressed a lack of surprise at the intelligence and complexity of elephants and their propensity for using diverse medicinal plants in the wild.

A recent study, detailed in a publication by the journal Nature, delves into the traditional knowledge shared by local wildlife scouts and community members regarding the use of medicinal plants by Mount Elgon elephants. This study highlights the importance of preserving the biodiversity that sustains these intelligent creatures.

The research, based on interviews with long-term observers from the Sabaot community, revealed instances of elephants seeking out specific plants when showing signs of illness and mother elephants feeding medicinal plants to their offspring. Among the 35 mentioned plants, 34 are commonly used in local traditional medicine, with eight of the top nine plants known for their pharmacological properties.

While this study serves as a valuable foundation for further exploration, experts like elephant ecologist Chase LaDue emphasize the need for additional evidence to confirm intentional self-medication among elephants. LaDue cautions that anecdotal evidence, while insightful, has its limitations and underscores the importance of empirical data in understanding animal behavior.

Freymann acknowledges that the research is just the initial phase of a broader investigation. By equipping local informants with cameras to capture elephants consuming medicinal plants, the research team aims to gather more concrete evidence to support the self-medication hypothesis.

If validated, the elephants’ self-medicating behavior would align them with other animals known to exhibit similar practices, such as chimpanzees, great apes, insects, and birds. This underscores the critical role of biodiversity in providing animals with essential resources for their well-being amidst changing environmental conditions.

Freymann advocates for the protection of habitats not only for preserving food sources and territories but also for safeguarding medicinal resources crucial for the flourishing of animal populations in an evolving ecosystem.
