Essex Mayor Sherry Bondy has proposed a moratorium on the establishment of AI data centers in the town. Bondy is seeking approval for this motion at the upcoming town council meeting on September 8. The proposal involves the preparation of an interim control by-law, which falls under the province’s Planning Act. Such by-laws enable municipalities to halt specific types of developments in designated areas for up to a year, with the possibility of extension for another year, to review their land use planning policies.
Bondy emphasized the importance of safeguarding the town and its environment while awaiting the county’s study on the matter. Her initiative comes after Essex County Council initiated steps to gather initial information on data center planning and explore the potential for a comprehensive study, which would include the associated costs.
A decision on whether to proceed with the study will be made by the county council on September 2. In a separate development, the provincial government recently introduced a new framework for AI data centers. The framework aims to promote sustainable practices such as closed-loop water systems, ensuring data centers cover their electricity costs, and encouraging self-sufficient power generation. However, Green Party leader Mike Schreiner criticized the framework for lacking robust regulatory support.
Premier Doug Ford defended the importance of data centers, urging critics to understand their benefits, especially considering the reliance of many local businesses on these facilities. Bondy, who previously faced criticism for using AI in communication, clarified that AI is a tool, but emphasized the need for careful consideration regarding the potential establishment of a data center in Essex from an environmental standpoint.
Bondy highlighted the importance of conducting thorough due diligence, drawing parallels with past experiences such as wind turbine installations in the town. She expressed concerns about potential provincial mandates regarding hosting data centers, underscoring the need for proactive measures to protect the environment and communities.
Local resident Tyler Reh has initiated a petition in support of Bondy’s motion, emphasizing the need to ensure minimal impact on the environment, existing industries, and wildlife. The proactive approach aims to prevent long-term repercussions similar to the challenges faced with previous developments like greenhouses in Leamington. Bondy and supporters are striving to address these concerns in advance to mitigate any adverse effects on the town’s ecosystem and industries.
