Starting today, a larger group of individuals, including Blue Badge holders, will now be eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard. The criteria for obtaining this railcard has been expanded to encompass a wider spectrum of visible and invisible disabilities.
The Disabled Persons Railcard offers a 33% discount on rail fares, translating to an average annual saving of approximately £126. The cost of a one-year railcard is £20, while a three-year railcard is priced at £54.
In addition to the cardholder, one person aged 16 or above traveling with them can also benefit from the discount. The eligibility criteria now include individuals with certain conditions, as well as those with long-term or degenerative medical conditions and specific forms of neurodiversity that significantly impact their ability to use train services.
The announcement regarding the expansion of the Disabled Persons Railcard eligibility criteria was initially made in November 2025, with further extensions planned for September 2026. Detailed information on required evidence and application guidelines will be released prior to the September changes.
Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and CEO at Rail Delivery Group, emphasized the importance of widening the eligibility criteria to facilitate easier access to rail services for more people. She highlighted the industry’s dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive railway network.
Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, expressed the significance of this expansion in enhancing inclusivity within the railway system. He emphasized the need for affordable and confident travel experiences for all passengers, underlining the commitment to accessibility laid out in the Accessible Railways Roadmap.
The ongoing efforts aim to establish a more welcoming and supportive railway network that caters to the diverse needs of passengers, ensuring a seamless travel experience for everyone.
