“Expatriate England Fans Worldwide Unite for World Cup 2022”

An expatriate army of England supporters is making their way to the World Cup this summer from various corners of the world, investing significant amounts to witness their favorite team in action.

Fans from distant places like Australia, Scandinavia, and across Europe are set to unite with Three Lions enthusiasts residing in the US. Many of them bonded during the Euro 2020 quarter-final victory against Ukraine in Rome last July. Among them is George Smith, a finance professional and Exeter City supporter, now living in San Diego, California with his wife and four children.

Reflecting on the upcoming event, George shared, “The camaraderie we built during the Euros in Rome has endured, and we are excited to reunite this summer with friends flying in from various countries such as Spain, Scandinavia, and Australia.”

He also highlighted the substantial presence of English fans in the United States, particularly in states like Florida, California, and New York, where a large British expatriate community resides.

Moreover, George emphasized the growing interest in the Premier League among Americans, mentioning the surge in popularity following NBC’s decision to broadcast live games in 2014.

George, 42, mentioned the vibrant atmosphere in bars during Premier League matches in San Diego, with games kicking off as early as 4 am. He also noted the impact of Hollywood figures like Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who acquired Wrexham Football Club, adding to the sport’s allure.

Planning to attend the games with his son and wife, George has already invested around $7,000 (£5,178) in tickets for his family. However, the total expenses could escalate to £12,000 depending on England’s progress in the tournament.

Despite the considerable distance traveled for the matches, George opted not to avail the $60 (£45) tickets offered by FIFA due to the controversy surrounding ticket pricing.

Commenting on the ticket costs, George criticized them as “scandalous” but expressed optimism about the World Cup’s potential to be the best yet. He acknowledged the challenges some fans face with travel restrictions but anticipated a vibrant atmosphere during the games.

In conclusion, George highlighted the diverse fan base expected to attend the matches, mentioning the anticipation of a memorable experience, even if it comes at a premium, especially when enjoying a beer at the stadium.
