Expats in Dubai Abandon Pets Amid Iran Threats

Published on

Expatriates in Dubai are abandoning their pets as they escape potential threats from Iran. Many individuals, including a significant number of Britons, are leaving the Middle East, leaving behind not only their families but also their beloved animals. Veterinarians in Dubai are witnessing a surge in requests from expats seeking to euthanize their pets, while dog re-homing organizations are struggling to cope with the overwhelming number of abandoned animals.

Social media platforms are flooded with distressing posts about deserted pets in the area. Some pet owners are resorting to putting down healthy animals due to concerns over relocation expenses and paperwork hassles. K9 Friends Dubai, a local dog re-housing group, is facing a growing number of inquiries about abandoned puppies and pets in need of new homes.

Amid the ongoing turmoil in the region, Claire Hopkins, a Dubai resident involved in animal charities, highlighted the financial strain on these groups due to the influx of animals and work. She mentioned the challenges of fundraising in Dubai, where platforms like GoFundMe are restricted. The chaotic situation in the region, marked by missile and drone attacks between Iran and Israel, has worsened the crisis of abandoned pets.

The disruption in flights across the region has further compounded the issue, with airlines operating limited services and not accepting animals for transport. Some pet owners have resorted to euthanizing their pets, adding to the burden faced by already overwhelmed shelters. Disturbing reports have emerged online, showing neglected dogs tied to lampposts without access to food or water.

Charities like War Paws, dedicated to aiding animals in conflict zones, emphasized that pet abandonment is a pervasive issue not only in Dubai but also in countries like Iraq and Ukraine. The CEO highlighted the unacceptable practice of leaving pets at borders or on the streets, emphasizing the need for responsible pet ownership. Despite the challenges, thousands of stranded Britons remain in the Middle East, with a significant number registering with the UK government for assistance.
