A vehicle suspected of carrying explosives was involved in an accident in a residential area of Amsterdam following a police pursuit.
The incident occurred after a chase that originated from an ATM burglary in Germany earlier today, as per local sources. Law enforcement, along with the military and emergency responders, are currently present at Nierkerkestraat in Osdorp.
Authorities have cordoned off the area, and residents within a hundred-meter radius have been evacuated due to the discovery of potential explosives in the crashed car. The occupants of the vehicle, described as “several young men,” fled the scene and are currently at large, according to reports from RTL.
The police pursuit was initiated following the ATM burglary in Germany around 4:30 am involving a BMW M1. The vehicle was initially spotted in Fürth, Bavaria, in central Germany, before being sighted in the Netherlands later in the morning.
Subsequently, the same vehicle crashed during the police pursuit in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, as reported by Dutch news outlet Nos. German authorities confirmed that no money was stolen during the ATM incident, but the structure housing the ATM sustained significant damage.
A fire broke out following the ATM explosion, but all residents managed to evacuate safely. Armed forces personnel and masked officers from the Special Intervention Service are currently stationed at the scene in Fürth.
Additionally, a police helicopter was dispatched to surveil the area, and the street where the explosion occurred has been sealed off. The situation has been classified as a major incident, with multiple ambulances visible in the vicinity, as depicted in videos from the scene.
