Fighter jets were deployed over Washington DC today, causing residents to hear a ‘sonic boom.’ The F-16 aircraft were sent into the sky to intercept a civilian plane that breached restricted airspace around 11:15 am.
The sonic boom was audible as the fighter jets escorted the unauthorized aircraft out of the restricted zone above the US capital, which is safeguarded by the highly regulated Special Flight Rules Area. Pilots are required to adhere to stringent protocols and maintain constant communication with air traffic control to prevent unauthorized entries within the 30-nautical-mile radius.
The US Air Force confirmed that fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a “general aviation aircraft” that violated restricted airspace and safely guided it away from the area. Pilots were also advised to stay informed about restricted zones, including those around Washington DC and Mar-a-Lago in Florida, where Trump resides.
The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) reported that NORAD F-16 fighter jets from the Continental U.S. NORAD Region intercepted a general aviation aircraft that breached FAA restricted airspace over the United States National Capital Region and safely redirected it without further incident. NORAD emphasized the importance of checking FAA Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) for various regions, including the National Capital Region and Mar-a-Lago.
NORAD’s statement highlighted that pilots encountering NORAD aircraft should immediately switch frequencies and reverse course until receiving further instructions. NORAD employs a sophisticated defense network comprising radars, satellites, and fighter planes to identify and respond to potential threats. The incident showcases NORAD’s execution of aerospace warning and control missions for the United States and Canada.
The cautionary message to pilots follows a series of incidents involving aircraft straying into restricted areas. Several instances have occurred recently where planes entered prohibited airspace near locations frequented by Donald Trump.
In September, six unauthorized planes entered restricted airspace over Bedminster, New Jersey, during a single weekend when Trump was at his golf course. NORAD responded by dispatching jets to investigate and intercept the aircraft. The planes, all small private aircraft, were redirected away from the Trump National Golf Club, with one intercepted by F-16 fighter jets, according to the US Air Force.
