“Families Advocate for Stricter Laws Against Body Desecration”

Published on

The mother of the late April Jones shared her heartbreaking experience of finding only a few bone fragments in her daughter’s coffin. This revelation coincided with the Government’s announcement of a new review of laws concerning body desecration. Coral, aged 54, disclosed that Mark Bridger, the perpetrator who abducted and murdered her five-year-old daughter, left only a small portion of her remains unrecovered. Coral, along with other bereaved families, has been advocating for stricter laws to prosecute individuals who violate the bodies of their victims.

In response to the families’ appeals, the Government has tasked the Law Commission with reevaluating the existing legislation. Coral emphasized the ongoing pain of not having closure due to April’s body still being missing. She highlighted the importance of having the body for proper farewells and emotional healing, citing the impact on her mental health without closure.

The advocacy for Helen’s Law Part 2: Stop the Desecration campaign, initiated by Marie McCourt, has gained support from Coral and other affected families. The campaign, aimed at addressing the desecration of bodies of murder victims, has garnered attention from policymakers. The Law Commission’s upcoming review, set to commence later this year, aims to identify deficiencies in the current criminal law and propose reforms to ensure respect for deceased bodies.

Coral reminisced about April’s life and mentioned the challenges she faced due to her daughter’s absence. As April’s 19th birthday approaches, Coral reflects on the passing of time and the perpetual grief of losing her daughter at such a young age. Other families, such as that of Mike O’Leary and Sarah Everard, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for legislative changes to address the desecration of bodies.

Minister Alex Davies-Jones expressed support for the families and highlighted the importance of criminalizing corpse desecration to provide justice and closure for grieving families. The Law Commission’s initiative was commended for addressing the gaps in the law and advocating for the dignity and respect of deceased bodies. The collaborative efforts of the affected families and policymakers aim to bring about meaningful change in the legal framework to prevent such atrocities in the future.
