Far-right group threatens to abduct Australian PM

Published on

A group associated with extreme right-wing ideologies reportedly made threats to abduct the Prime Minister of Australia following a frightening incident at Bondi Beach, as disclosed in disturbing chat messages. Two police operations were initiated after alleged discussions about kidnapping Anthony Albanese and placing explosives in mosques were exposed. Within an online chatroom, a message indicated an offer of £5000 ($10,000 AUD) to hire a van and seize Albanese to establish a new “nationalist” government. The group, consisting of far-right individuals, established the chatroom as part of the organization behind a white nationalist demonstration protesting perceived high levels of immigration to Australia, known as March for Australia.

According to leaked information from the Discord group, an individual using the username “cav” proposed the alarming scheme to the group. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that “cav” advocated for forcefully questioning Albanese by physically restraining him in a room. When questioned by another member if he intended to carry out the plan, cav expressed readiness to proceed and invited others to join the abduction attempt. Furthermore, a member of the chat offered cav £5,000 ($10,000 AUD) to execute the plan, leading cav to acknowledge his descent into the realm of terrorism and his belief in seizing power through violent means.

Subsequently, another user in the same Discord chat, identified as “xertz,” claimed to have attracted police attention after discussing the production and delivery of bombs to mosques and was subsequently removed from Discord for mentioning potential terrorist actions. Hugo Lennon, a coordinator for March for Australia, denied knowledge of specific threats against Albanese or mosques, asserting that the organization condemns violence and disassociates from such actions.

In a separate incident, plumber Nathan Ballesty, 27, was arrested by police following an investigation into a social media post suggesting the kidnapping of the Prime Minister. Ballesty, known to have affiliations with neo-Nazi groups and photographed with neo-Nazis at events, was linked to the National Socialist Network.

Albanese, addressing concerns on ABC’s Insiders, acknowledged an escalation in threats against him and emphasized his commitment to the safety of all Australians over personal security. He expressed confidence in the Australian Federal Police and authorities to address security challenges and affirmed his determination to engage with the public despite the risks.
