“Fatal Avalanches Strike French Alps Skiers”

Published on

Another British skier has tragically lost his life in a skiing accident, this time due to an avalanche that also claimed the life of a Polish individual. The incident occurred as the group of five skiers ventured off-piste near La Grave in the French Alps. Despite prompt mountain rescue efforts, the two victims could not be saved.

In a separate avalanche incident in the Valloire area, one person lost their life, and two others sustained critical injuries. These tragic events follow closely after two British men, Stuart Leslie and Shaun Overy, along with a French skier lost their lives in an avalanche in Val d’Isere. The authorities are conducting investigations to determine the causes of these deadly avalanches.

Stuart Leslie, 46, and Shaun Overy, 51, were part of a group that had ventured off-piste under the guidance of an instructor in Val d’Isère, France, during a red avalanche alert. The two friends, along with the French skier, were overwhelmed by cascading snow and were swept down the slope into a stream, where rescue teams later recovered their bodies.

A British skier managed to survive the avalanche by freeing himself from the snow. Cédric Bonnevie, the piste director at Val d’Isère, described how the avalanche traveled 400 meters before coming to a stop in the stream below. The exact trigger of the avalanche remains unknown, although there are speculations that it might have been caused by the solo skier above the group.

Although Leslie and Overy were located swiftly using avalanche transceivers, the third victim’s body took longer to find due to the device being submerged in the stream, rendering it ineffective. Search efforts involving avalanche probes and a dog team eventually led to the discovery of the third victim hours later.

Meteo-France, the national weather service, issued an avalanche warning for the Northern Alps and Hautes-Alpes, including La Grave, due to the high avalanche risk. The warning remains in effect amid forecasts of sunny weather, which could lead to thawing ice and further avalanche risks.
