“Fatal Blast at Illegal Fireworks Factory in Thailand”

Published on

A recent tragic incident unfolded as a clandestine fireworks manufacturing facility exploded, resulting in a fatal fireball. The explosion occurred at an unauthorized factory in central Thailand, causing the death of one worker and severe injuries to three others. The facility, operating with an expired license, was engaged in the production of pyrotechnics for the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations when a stockpile ignited, triggering the devastating blast in Suphanburi province, approximately 70 miles north of Bangkok.

Authorities responding to the scene discovered the lifeless body of Saneh Thongsrilang, aged 58, while Chaiya Kaewboondee, 38, Wiroj Plerdplern, 58, and Amnat Phophan, 49, were swiftly transported to the hospital in critical condition. Footage taken at the site revealed charred debris scattered around the premises, leaving only the wooden framework and pillars intact. Law enforcement is now probing the cause of the explosion and have initiated inquiries with the building’s owner.

Local emergency services issued a warning on social media urging residents to make way for rescue teams following the fireworks explosion at Ban Dong Kra Chao, Rai Rot subdistrict. Subsequent updates confirmed that the fire had been contained, and the nearby Dong Krachao Buddhist temple remained unharmed. Concerns were expressed by a resident regarding safety hazards associated with fireworks manufacturing in the region, advocating for an end to production to safeguard workers and property.

Thailand has grappled with a series of illegal fireworks factory accidents over the years due to inadequate safety oversight, a thriving underground economy, and limited resources in rural areas. In a previous incident in July, another illicit fireworks factory explosion in Suphanburi resulted in nine fatalities and five injuries. Similarly, an explosion at an illegal fireworks warehouse in Narathiwat province in 2023 claimed the lives of at least 12 individuals, left over 120 wounded, and caused extensive destruction to hundreds of homes and structures.
