“Fatal Landslides Strike New Zealand: Two Dead, Others Trapped”

Published on

Two individuals have tragically lost their lives in a severe landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in New Zealand. The incident involved two separate landslides impacting a residential property and a campground, resulting in the confirmed deaths and ongoing efforts to locate other individuals believed to be trapped under the debris.

The Welcome Bay community in Papamoa was struck by the first landslide at 4:50 am, prompting a swift response from emergency services. While two individuals managed to escape from a house, rescuers discovered the bodies of two others who were initially trapped inside.

Subsequently, emergency services were summoned to another landslide near Mount Maunganui, where a holiday park was hit by cascading debris, causing damage to vehicles, trailers, and facilities. Despite the chaos, there were reports of voices emanating from beneath the rubble at the Mount Maunganui site, as confirmed by Fire and Emergency NZ commander William Pike.

Rescue operations at the Mount Maunganui location are ongoing, with Police Superintendent Tim Anderson disclosing that the number of missing persons is in single digits. Search efforts, including the deployment of dogs to detect potential survivors, have been fruitless thus far, with no individuals found alive or deceased as of late Thursday.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon issued a cautionary statement urging residents to adhere to guidance from local authorities due to the perilous weather conditions persisting across the North Island. Mark Mitchell refrained from divulging specifics about the missing individuals in the Mount Maunganui landslide, citing the sensitivity of the situation and the ongoing investigative process.

As search and recovery operations continue at the affected sites, authorities are meticulously reviewing security camera footage to ascertain the movements of individuals before the disasters struck. Mitchell emphasized the strenuous efforts being made by rescue teams under challenging circumstances, highlighting the looming threat of additional landslides at the scene.
