“Fatal Meningitis Outbreak in Kent Linked to MenB Strain”

Published on

The Health Security Agency in the UK has pinpointed the type of meningitis responsible for the recent fatal outbreak in Kent. The infections have been identified as MenB, a severe bacterial form of meningitis that can lead to inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

In the Kent area, three schools have reported cases of the illness following the outbreak that claimed the lives of two students and resulted in 11 hospital admissions. Among the deceased individuals was Juliette Kenny, a year 13 student at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Faversham, Kent, described as exceptionally kind, thoughtful, and intelligent by her headteacher.

Another fatality occurred at the University of Kent, where some hospitalized individuals have been placed in induced comas. The Health Security Agency announced ongoing investigations into the meningitis outbreak, with 13 cases reported since March 13, including the two fatalities.

Individuals who visited Club Chemistry in Canterbury on March 5, 6, or 7 have been advised to seek antibiotic treatment as a precautionary measure. The club’s owner estimated that more than 2,000 people attended the venue during those dates.

Trish Mannes, UKHSA regional deputy director for the South East, expressed condolences to those affected and emphasized the importance of individuals who visited Club Chemistry during the specified dates to undergo preventive antibiotic treatment. Students at the University of Kent were observed lining up for antibiotics on campus, with some opting to return home to their families.

The University of Kent is closely following guidance from UKHSA and providing information to students and staff. They are contacting individuals who have had contact with confirmed cases within the university community to offer guidance and support.

In light of the situation, in-person assessments and exams have been suspended for the week, and schools will directly inform students of alternative arrangements. The university acknowledged the distressing and concerning circumstances faced by members of their community during this period.
