A surge in fatalities has overwhelmed mortuaries across France following scorching temperatures of up to 44 degrees Celsius during a severe heatwave. Funeral homes in Paris and surrounding areas are inundated with a high volume of calls as they struggle to accommodate the increasing number of bodies. With all available spaces in the cold storage facilities occupied, funeral director Zouhaeir Hertelli is forced to turn away numerous requests.

The ongoing heatwave, which shattered previous records, has shifted its deadly impact towards other parts of Europe. France is now coming to terms with the devastating human toll left by the extreme temperatures. While the official count of heat-related deaths may take weeks or even months to finalize, the grim reality of the situation is evident, especially among the elderly population who succumbed to the heat in their homes.

Hertelli expressed the dire situation, stating that the unprecedented spike in deaths due to the heatwave has left mortuaries operating at full capacity. Public Health France reported over 1,200 deaths on the hottest day recorded in France, surpassing the previous day’s record. The death toll continued to climb, reaching over 1,400 fatalities on consecutive days, far exceeding the average daily death rate before the heatwave.

The agency cautioned that the estimated additional deaths during the scorching days are likely to increase as more death certificates are processed, particularly for individuals who passed away at home or in elder care facilities. The majority of the recorded deaths involved individuals aged 65 and above, with a significant rise in deaths at home, notably in the Paris region, prompting a shortage of storage space in Paris mortuaries.

In response to the crisis, City Hall installed temporary storage units to accommodate the overflow of bodies, emphasizing the need to learn from past experiences. Funeral director Veronique Bertrand highlighted the vulnerability of those living alone and isolated, attributing many deaths to the extreme heat. She urged for a renewed sense of community and vigilance to prevent future tragedies, emphasizing the importance of checking on neighbors and providing support during heatwaves.
