“Fatboy Slim Thrills Fans at Radio 1’s Big Weekend”

Fatboy Slim, also known as Norman Cook, expressed his delight at performing at the BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, marking over three decades in the music industry. Playfully comparing himself to a returning uncle checking on his nieces and nephews at Christmas, Cook highlighted the honor of being invited after such a long career. The 62-year-old DJ shared the stage with Zara Larsson and Olivia Dean at Sunderland’s Herrington Country Park for the festival.

Reflecting on his longevity in the industry, Cook mentioned how his audience has evolved over time. He noted the cyclical nature of music appreciation, with fans who grew up listening to his music now attending his shows with their own children. Drawing parallels to his own childhood fascination with The Beatles, Cook emphasized the generational connection in music.

During his set at the festival, Cook performed his classic hits like “Praise You” and “The Rockafeller Skank,” showcasing his enduring appeal. Despite his vibrant on-stage persona, Cook revealed a significant change in his offstage lifestyle – he has been sober for 17 years now. Adapting to performing without alcohol was initially daunting for him, but he found solace in the communal energy sparked by the music.

As a headliner at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Cook shared insights into his family life, mentioning his role as a supportive father to his children. While his daughter Nelly focuses on her GCSE exams, his son Woody has ventured into DJing, a path that surprised Cook and his ex-wife Zoe Ball. The family’s entertainment background seems to have influenced their children’s career aspirations.

Cook’s close relationship with Zoe, who lives nearby, has allowed them to co-parent effectively even after their separation. While Zoe supports Nelly during her exams, Woody explores his DJing career, reflecting a mix of his parents’ talents. The family’s dynamic and shared passion for music continue to shape their lives and careers.
