“Father Admits Shaking Infant Son to Death in Frustration”

Published on

A man has admitted to causing the death of his infant son by shaking him violently in a moment of frustration over the baby’s crying. Peter Sayle, aged 32, entered a guilty plea to a charge of manslaughter during his trial at Preston Crown Court, ending more than three years of denial regarding his role in his son’s harm.

The tragic incident unfolded when six-week-old Huxley was rushed to the hospital after his mother, Livinia Sharples, called emergency services reporting that the baby was not breathing at their residence in Fulwood, Preston. Sayle initially claimed that the child stopped breathing after making a gurgling noise and gasping for air while he was downstairs attempting to feed and soothe him.

During sentencing, Mr. Justice Bryan expressed certainty that Sayle had shaken Huxley violently out of frustration and anger towards the baby’s crying and his own inability to calm him. The court learned that prior to the fatal incident, Sayle had conducted searches on his mobile phone indicating his struggles with bonding with the baby and feelings of frustration, especially at night.

Medical examinations revealed severe brain injuries in Huxley consistent with shaking trauma, leading to his transfer to an intensive care unit where he never regained consciousness and life support was eventually withdrawn. The post-mortem examination confirmed a traumatic head injury as the cause of death, with additional evidence pointing to prior rib fractures caused by forceful squeezing.

Despite initially denying murder charges, Sayle’s guilty plea to manslaughter was accepted by the prosecution. The court highlighted his lack of remorse and accountability for his actions, emphasizing his knowledge of the risks associated with shaking a baby and the irreversible consequences of his actions.

Following the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows of Lancashire Constabulary condemned Sayle’s lack of remorse and attempts to deflect blame, stating that Sayle chose deception over accepting responsibility for the tragic death of baby Huxley.
