A father has been sentenced to jail after evading authorities for several months and caused a commotion in court upon being incarcerated.
The dramatic conclusion followed a prolonged legal saga involving three individuals who fled after being released on bail following a violent altercation in Birmingham’s Gay Village district in July 2023. Thomas Sweeney, his wife Ellen Sweeney, and their son Thomas Sweeney Jr were among those engaged in the brawl, which also involved other family members, as captured by detailed CCTV footage. The incident was described by Judge Dean Kershaw as one of the most severe disturbances in Birmingham.
Although the Sweeneys admitted to participating in the disorder, they sought bail, citing Thomas Jr’s upcoming marriage. Despite being granted bail, the trio failed to appear in court on August 29, 2024, and were believed to have fled to Ireland. Consequently, they were sentenced in absentia to immediate imprisonment.
Judge Kershaw later pressed for updates on the efforts to locate the fugitives. Thomas Jr was eventually apprehended on the M6 highway and received a sentence extension for failing to surrender, in addition to his existing term for the 2023 incident.
Recently, Thomas Sr surrendered to the police and faced the court in Birmingham. His defense lawyer mentioned family complications and community pressures as reasons for his evasion, which the judge dismissed as baseless excuses. Despite earlier leniency for attending a wedding, the judge criticized Thomas Sr for his lack of remorse and imposed an additional three-month sentence on top of his existing term.
During the proceedings, Thomas Sr erupted in a verbal outburst, accusing the judge of bias and was promptly removed from the courtroom. Judge Kershaw condemned his disruptive behavior and handed down the additional sentence for his actions in the Gay Village altercation.
