A man has created an unconventional living space on an old pirate ship while awaiting approval to make it his permanent residence. Sam Griffiss, a 35-year-old father, invested his life savings in transforming the vessel into a unique home situated near the River Severn in Bewdley, Worcestershire. Griffiss shared that he acquired the ship, named Daisy May, for £500 from eBay in November 2024. Despite facing challenges during the renovation process, he managed to construct an extension on the hull and complete the project using materials he had gathered over the years.
To combat the cold weather, Griffiss installed log burners and a diesel heater in the ship, ensuring a cozy living environment. His long-term vision for the property includes turning it into a wellness retreat where visitors can enjoy activities like saunas, cold dips, and outdoor experiences. However, the lack of official approval hinders his plans to generate income and host guests overnight. Griffiss emphasized the importance of obtaining planning permission to legitimize his venture and enable his daughter to stay with him. He expressed his eagerness to offer recreational activities such as archery, axe throwing, fishing, and canoe rental to visitors, pending the council’s decision.
Griffiss faces a dilemma as the local council is currently investigating his property and has not provided any comments on his case. The uncertainty surrounding the planning permission could potentially lead to the dismantling of the pirate ship if denied. Despite the challenges, Griffiss remains optimistic about realizing his vision for the unique living space he has created.
