A 25-year-old father, Callum Hobson, endured a traumatic experience after suffering severe reactions upon discontinuing the use of a steroid cream. His condition, known as Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW) or Red Skin Syndrome (RSS), caused his skin to ooze and peel, leading to significant distress. Callum, from Hull, East Yorkshire, missed the birth of his daughter due to the worsening of his condition, which prevented him from holding her for six months.
Prescribed the steroid cream in December 2022 for blemishes caused by fibreglass insulation, Callum used it for a year without being informed that it should not be used for more than five days. He expressed disappointment in not receiving adequate warnings from healthcare providers about the risks of prolonged use.
Upon cessation of the cream in November 2023, Callum experienced oozing sores all over his body, necessitating extensive treatments costing him £10,000. Despite various interventions, including oral steroids and immunosuppressants, his skin condition deteriorated, leading to his hospitalization.
Struggling with his health, Callum had to leave his job and was bedridden for six months. The emotional toll of missing significant events, such as his daughter’s birth, weighed heavily on him. To raise awareness, he shared his story and initiated a crowdfunding campaign to support his ongoing treatment, including cold atmospheric plasma therapy.
Having undergone 20 sessions of treatment already, Callum aims to raise additional funds for further therapy sessions to address the remaining skin issues. He remains optimistic about his progress and the potential for complete healing with continued support from donors.
