Mysterious details have surfaced regarding a female researcher whose skeletal remains were discovered in a forest almost a year after she went missing.
Melissa Casias, a 53-year-old administrative assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico, vanished in June 2025 after an unexpected return home from work, leading to extensive searches and pleas from her family for more police involvement.
On May 28 of this year, a hiker found a decomposed body alongside a firearm in the McGaffy Ridge area of Carson National Forest, with the skull showing possible gunshot wounds. The body was later identified as that of Melissa Casias.
New Mexico State Police confirmed the identity of the body as Ms. Casias’ but stated that the cause and manner of death are yet to be determined. Further investigation by medical experts is planned.
Concerns have arisen about the possibility of foul play as Melissa’s daughter, Sierra, mentioned that her mother did not own a gun. Authorities are working to trace the ownership of the firearm found at the scene using serial numbers, ballistics, and forensic analysis.
Thomas McNally, a former FBI homicide detective assisting the family in the case, reported that Melissa’s remains were discovered next to a tree with an abandoned gun nearby, showing no signs of animal interference despite the forest’s wildlife presence.
In a recent update on Facebook, Melissa’s family expressed shock at finding her in an area previously searched, pledging to seek justice and closure.
Sierra recalled in a TV interview the last interactions with her mother before she vanished, including an unusual return home in the morning and a brief lunch visit later in the day. Melissa’s failure to return home that evening sparked a search that yielded no results until the recent discovery.
Investigations revealed that Melissa’s personal devices had been wiped clean, adding to the mystery of her disappearance. Extensive search efforts involving ground teams, K9 units, and drones were unsuccessful until the recent breakthrough.
