A mother was surprised to find fentanyl hidden inside a Barbie doll box she purchased for her young daughter. Jade Adams bought the tampered doll from Cargo Largo in Independence on Saturday, March 21, while out shopping with her family.
The Independence Police Department was alerted by Cargo Largo Security about a suspicious powder substance found in the Barbie Doll packaging around 10:18 am. Following investigation, the substance was identified as fentanyl, prompting a joint effort between IPD and Cargo Largo to determine the extent of the compromised units sold.
According to a police spokesperson, five compromised units were sold, with four units successfully tracked down. Efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining unit. The investigation revealed that the Barbie Dolls themselves were not compromised, as the fentanyl was found taped inside the back packaging. There is no indication that compromised units were distributed to other retailers, and no injuries have been reported.
Adams returned to the store to alert staff to remove the dolls from the shelves. She expressed fear over the potential consequences if the drug had been exposed to her children, emphasizing the importance of child safety.
Fentanyl, a potent opioid painkiller, is typically prescribed by doctors to manage severe pain following surgeries or injuries. While it can alleviate pain effectively, fentanyl may cause side effects, and its usage should be closely monitored by healthcare providers.
The NHS has issued a warning regarding the risks associated with fentanyl use on its website to inform individuals about the potential side effects, especially at higher doses. Despite being in the news due to illegal trafficking issues, fentanyl remains a regulated prescription drug in both the UK and the US.
