“FIFA President’s Handshake Attempt Backfires Amid Middle East Conflict”

Published on

FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, faced a failed attempt at a public handshake between Israeli and Palestinian representatives. Despite confirming his plan to run for a third term, the gesture backfired as the Palestinian Football Federation President, Jibril Rajoub, refused to stand alongside the Israeli FA Vice President, Basim Sheikh Suliman, citing ongoing suffering in the region.

The conflict in Gaza, now in its third year, has intensified with increased fighting in the West Bank. Recent British Red Cross data from March 2026 revealed a devastating death toll exceeding 69,000, including over 17,000 children and at least 170,000 casualties.

Infantino, who is eyeing re-election in Rabat, Morocco, downplayed the incident, emphasizing the need for collaboration to bring hope to children amidst the complexities of the situation. However, Rajoub declined the gesture, expressing discontent with Infantino’s attempt at diplomacy.

Palestinian FA Vice President Susan Shalabi echoed these sentiments, rejecting the handshake as a symbol of opposition to what she perceived as Israeli actions. This incident added to FIFA’s string of controversies in the midst of preparations for the upcoming 2026 World Cup across North America.

In a separate development, Iran’s absence at a recent congress in Canada raised concerns about the nation’s participation in the World Cup, casting doubt on their involvement in Group G matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. Despite uncertainties, Infantino affirmed Iran’s inclusion, receiving support from President Donald Trump, who endorsed the decision.

As the World Cup approaches, ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to affect the sporting landscape, with FIFA and its leaders navigating through diplomatic challenges while preparing for the upcoming tournament.
