Fired Masterchef presenter Gregg Wallace has publicly acknowledged that the offensive comment leading to his termination was “foolish, defensive, and arrogant.”
After breaking his silence post-dismissal, Wallace, aged 61, issued an apology for his actions. He emphasized that the suggestive remarks on Masterchef were not more severe than those on Bake Off, comparing the two popular shows.
Wallace clarified that it was never his intent to make anyone feel uncomfortable and now comprehends why contestants may have been hesitant to confront his behavior, fearing it could affect their chances of winning the program. He was removed from the BBC show in July last year following allegations of inappropriate behavior and comments, which he vehemently denies.
In a detailed apology shared on Instagram, Wallace, who hails from Peckham, southeast London, expressed regret for his past statements. He admitted to making a regrettable, defensive comment when the allegations first emerged, recognizing that listening and reflecting are crucial when facing criticism.
Reflecting on his 20-year tenure, Wallace explained that his boisterous on-screen persona was influenced by the vibrant work environment and the show’s culture. He described the lively atmosphere on set, where humor, including colorful language and innuendos, was prevalent, akin to the tone of Bake Off.
Acknowledging the sexual nature of some jokes, Wallace mentioned that innuendo was a common element due to the nature of food-related humor. He highlighted how everyone on set participated in banter and discussions about relationships, fostering a culture of high energy and occasional crudeness.
Wallace emphasized that his behavior was in line with the expected workplace conduct at the time, aimed at creating a comfortable environment for contestants and contributing to the show’s dynamics. He expressed regret for any misunderstandings and emphasized his belief that his actions were in line with the prevailing culture.
Notably, Wallace mentioned that there was no prior indication that his conduct was inappropriate, as it was seemingly encouraged until a shift in standards occurred in 2018.
