A tragic incident has claimed the life of a recently married fitness influencer in a devastating road accident involving a retired downhill skier.
Laura Viktoria Hartig, aged 30, sustained critical injuries in a collision with a motorbike while cycling in the Dolomites of northern Italy during her honeymoon and has sadly passed away.
The German social media personality, boasting over 51,000 followers on Instagram, had tied the knot with her husband Tilman just days before embarking on their honeymoon in the mountains.
The fatal crash occurred on the Passo Sella mountain pass on June 23 when Laura collided head-on with a motorcycle ridden uphill by former Italian downhill skier Peter Runggaldier, a two-time Alpine Ski World Cup race winner.
The impact of the accident was so severe that Laura’s bike was split in two, and both individuals were thrown several meters onto the road.
Emergency responders, including two rescue helicopters, swiftly arrived at the scene, airlifting Laura to a hospital in Bolzano in critical condition.
Despite extensive medical interventions, Laura succumbed to her injuries on Sunday after nearly three weeks in intensive care, following her transfer to a specialized clinic in Bavaria, Germany, to be closer to her family.
Runggaldier, who sustained multiple fractures and abdominal injuries, survived the collision, while authorities are conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a message on his Instagram account, Runggaldier requested privacy and compassion during his time of mourning over the tragic road accident.
Laura was renowned for her online presence showcasing hiking, cycling, and outdoor escapades in the Alps, with her last Instagram post before the accident capturing moments from her wedding ceremony in the Dolomites, captioned “Soulmate for life.”
Italian police confirmed the road accident on Facebook, detailing the incident involving a motorcycle and a bicycle at Passo Sella, leading to temporary traffic disruptions and prompt emergency services response.
