An attorney representing a former CNN anchor has criticized what he called an unprecedented assault on freedom of speech in the United States following the anchor’s controversial arrest.
The anchor, Lemon, was taken into custody by federal agents while covering the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. The long-time journalist was apprehended after filming anti-immigrant enforcement demonstrators disrupting a service at a church in Minnesota.
Lemon’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, condemned the arrest, stating that it was a diversion from more critical issues, such as the federal agents involved in the deaths of peaceful protesters. Lowell emphasized Lemon’s intention to vigorously challenge the charges in court.
Previously, Lemon had defended his decision to cover the protest inside the church as an act of journalism.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi labeled the incident as a coordinated attack on the church, accusing Lemon and other protestors of participating in it. The specific charges against Lemon remain unclear, although others have been charged with infringing on religious freedom within a place of worship.
The White House took a provocative stance, posting a photo of Lemon with a caption suggesting his involvement in the church riots without specifying any details.
CNN expressed deep concerns about press freedom and the First Amendment in a statement following Lemon’s arrest. The network highlighted the importance of protecting journalists’ rights to report news freely and announced its close monitoring of the case.
Protests have erupted in various US cities following the fatal shootings of American citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE officers, sparking outrage over perceived violations of First and Second Amendment rights.
The First Amendment protects freedom of speech, while the Second Amendment allows legal firearm possession, subject to state regulations. Criticism has been directed at the Trump administration for labeling the deceased as “domestic terrorists” and using contentious language to justify their actions.
Lemon transitioned to independent work after being dismissed from CNN in 2023 due to controversial remarks made about then-Republican nominee Nikki Haley.
