A man, 26, has been taken into custody on suspicion of the murder of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, aged 78. Widdecombe was found with severe injuries in her bungalow on the outskirts of Dartmoor, Devon. The incident was reported by a carer who found her with at least one serious head wound. The exact cause of death has not been confirmed by the police.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman mentioned that there is no indication of political motivation behind the murder and it is too early to determine if the suspect had any prior connection to Widdecombe. The suspect, a white British national, was apprehended in Newton Abbott, approximately eight miles away from the crime scene. Law enforcement officials have ruled out any terrorism links in this case.

The circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether anything was stolen, if the perpetrator broke into the residence, or if a weapon was used, remain unclear. Devon and Cornwall Police announced a murder inquiry at 3:50 pm on Friday afternoon.

Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson stated that the investigation is progressing swiftly. She expressed condolences to Widdecombe’s family and friends and emphasized the urgent nature of the investigation to identify the responsible individual, believed to be a white male.

Police authorities were called to Widdecombe’s residence in Haytor Vale within Dartmoor National Park on Thursday morning. Widdecombe, who lived alone, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are reconstructing her movements from her last public appearance on Wednesday morning up to the time of her death through extensive inquiries and CCTV footage analysis.

The retired MP, who relocated to her Devon dwelling known as “Widdecombe’s Rest” in 2008, had previously shared her perspective on security concerns. She mentioned being unafraid despite potential risks and had a light-hearted approach to security measures, including surveillance cameras in her garden for protection against theft.
