As the anticipation builds for an exciting summer of top-tier football, Brits are gearing up for the final countdown. Despite the widespread affection for the sport, many admit to being casual followers, with 60% confessing to being fair-weather fans and 48% feeling out of their depth during football discussions. A recent study by Asda uncovered that 28% lack confidence to engage in football conversations, while 46% fear making mistakes in front of more knowledgeable enthusiasts.
Nonetheless, the desire to be part of the excitement remains strong, as 74% express enjoyment during key game moments even if they don’t grasp all the details. To blend in, some resort to bluffing, with 15% pretending to know the rules they don’t and 14% resorting to quick online searches mid-chat. To aid fans in navigating the intricacies of football, Asda has enlisted former England player Chris Kamara and ex-Scotland striker Kris Boyd to simplify the basics.
Transitioning from the studio to supermarket aisles, Chris and Kris decode perplexing rules, terminologies, and match scenarios that often confuse fans, such as offside and player positions. Chris Kamara emphasized, “Football is for everyone, whether you’re a lifelong follower or a periodic observer during major tournaments. We all start somewhere, and if a few pointers help people feel more comfortable joining the conversation, then that’s what matters.”
Kris Boyd chimed in, stating, “There’s no shame in being a fair-weather fan. Major tournaments unite everyone, and you don’t need to be an expert on every tactic or rule to relish the experience. If we can assist people in grasping the fundamentals, sharing a laugh, and feeling included in discussions, then we’ve achieved our goal.”
To bring the initiative to life, Asda is introducing it in stores, with staff wearing badges signaling their willingness to chat about football, regardless of their level of knowledge. The Asda match fit video series featuring Kamara and Boyd will be accessible across Asda’s social platforms, aiding fans in honing their understanding before the tournament kicks off.
