“Former Minister Mandelson Arrested in Public Office Probe”

Published on

The recent arrest of Peter Mandelson, which occurred more than two weeks after a police search of his properties, has been described as an unusual turn of events by a former senior detective.

Following a search of Lord Mandelson’s London residence and rented farmhouse in Wiltshire related to allegations of passing sensitive information to Jeffrey Epstein, the ex-Labour minister was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. This development was prompted by revelations from the recent release of documents by the US Department of Justice linked to the Epstein case.

Unlike the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor during an early morning raid, Mandelson was picked up at his home in north London in the late afternoon. The arrest, made by plain clothes detectives, was deemed unusual for its timing during the day.

Former Met Detective Chief Inspector David McKelvey highlighted the uncommon nature of making an arrest late in the day during an ongoing investigation, noting the time constraints officers face in questioning a suspect post-arrest.

To justify an arrest, officers must demonstrate reasonable grounds to suspect an offense has occurred and show the necessity for specific reasons. The decision to arrest Mandelson was based on meeting this “necessity test,” as confirmed by Scotland Yard in a statement announcing his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Upon arrival at the police station, Mandelson underwent standard booking procedures, including being searched, providing personal details, and fingerprinting. While in custody, suspects are allowed certain privileges like making a telephone call and the provision of basic amenities like food and beverages.

Despite not publicly addressing the Epstein files, Mandelson maintains his innocence regarding any criminal actions or financial motivations. His arrest was carried out by officers from the Met’s central specialist crime command, with ongoing discussions between the police and the Crown Prosecution Service regarding the case.

Police conducted searches at Mandelson’s London home and Wiltshire farmhouse following advice he received from Epstein. Detectives seized multiple items from his properties, including files and documents, as part of their investigation.
