Police have apprehended a man in connection with the suspected murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe, but authorities do not believe the incident is politically motivated. The 78-year-old was discovered deceased at her residence in Haytor, a village in Devon’s Dartmoor region. Widdecombe, a former Conservative MP who later served as a Brexit Party MEP and a Reform UK spokesperson, lived alone and was found by a caregiver with severe head injuries. While the cause of death has not yet been disclosed, a 26-year-old white British male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody in Newton Abbot, approximately 10 miles from the victim’s home.
During a press briefing, Devon and Cornwall Police’s Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated that there is no evidence of a politically motivated or terror-related motive behind the crime. It remains unclear if any items were stolen during the assault, or how the perpetrator gained entry to the house or carried out the attack.
Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson emphasized the rapid progress of the murder investigation, expressing condolences to Widdecombe’s loved ones. Authorities are focused on identifying the responsible individual, believed to be a white male. Shortly after the briefing, a suspect was arrested, with Chief Constable Longman urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
Responding to an emergency call from the ambulance service on Thursday morning, police arrived at Widdecombe’s residence in Haytor Vale, within Dartmoor National Park, where she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family has been notified and is receiving support from law enforcement.
Having retired in 2001, Widdecombe had resided at her Devon property, known as Widdecombe’s Rest, since 2008. In a past interview, she conveyed a sense of security despite potential threats, noting her minimal security measures and nonchalant attitude towards risks. She acknowledged receiving death threats previously but dismissed them, emphasizing the importance of open interaction between politicians and the public.
